Levofloxacin
Indications/Uses
Serious infections due to levofloxacin-sensitive microorganism eg, acute maxilliary sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated UTI, uncomplicated skin & soft tissue infections, acute pyelonephritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral Adult Usual dose 250-750 mg once daily. Chronic bronchitis w/ acute exacerbation 500 mg/24 hr for 7 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 500 mg/24 hr for 7-14 days. Acute maxillary sinusitis 500 mg/24 hr for 10-14 days. Uncomplicated skin & skin structure infection 500 mg/24 hr for 7-10 days. Complicated UTI, acute pyelonephritis 250 mg/24 hr for 10 days. IV 500 mg/100 mL by slow IV infusion for not be <60 min or 750 mg/150 mL by slow IV infusion for 90 min.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if shock or hypersensitivity reactions occur. Patients w/ sensitivity to neurological disorders. Blood glucose should be monitored in patients receiving oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin therapy. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients w/ impaired renal function. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, anorexia, headache, insomnia, drowsiness, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, hallucination, psychotic reactions, dyspepsia, tremor, taste perversion, skin rash, itching, urticaria, edema, increased sweating, vaginitis, genital moniliasis, leukorrhea, malaise, tiredness.
Drug Interactions
Absorption may be reduced by Al- & Mg-containing antacids, sucralfate, metal cations, multivit. NSAID may enhance CNS stimulation & convulsion. May increase theophylline conc in plasma. Antidiabetic including insulin.
